Kava Ceremonies and Meke

The local villagers regularly visit Qamea for a special treat . . . Meke. This traditional Fijian ceremony is a mix of food, dance, entertainment and song, and for many guests is the highlight of their visit to Qamea. The meke is followed with music from our own Fijian band.

Throughout the evening you will be invited to share with our band and guests in traditional kava drinking. Prior to the kava ceremony, usually just before sunset, our activities coordinator will show you our very own kava patch and explain to you how it is grown and nurtured to maturity. He will then invite you to watch (and assist) in the traditional method of "pounding" kava root into the fine powder that is then used for the kava ceremony and kava drinking throughout the evening.
